It’s a big weekend for both fans of violent, dragon-filled fantasy and sequinned blazers and folk chanting, as both the finals of Game Of Thrones and the Eurovision Song Contest will air.

The grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest takes place on Saturday night, with the last ever episode of Game Of Thrones airing on Sunday night in the US, and being simulcast in the UK.

But if you think these two things don’t have much in common, you’d be wrong – and no, we’re not just talking about the ruthless struggle to destroy all other nations and become king or queen.

It turns out Euron Greyjoy actually hosted the Eurovision once, which is a crossover we are totally living for.

Pilou Asbæk presented the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest when it took place in Denmark, and it’s safe to say he was loving life.

The Danish actor was in charge of hosting alongside Nikolaj Koppel and Lise Rønne in Copenhagen  following Emmelie De Forest’s win in 2013, and Pilou really gave it everything he had.

The now 37-year-old even showed off his own singing and dancing skills, taking part in a musical number called The 12 Point Song in which he broke off in his own solo to sing about Chinese trivia.

It was all very odd.

Fast forward two years, and Pilou nabbed the role of the sadistic and ruthless Euron in season six of Game Of Thrones, and went on to slay dragons and shack up with Queen Cersei in the eighth and final series.

Sadly, he will not be in the final episode, as (spoilers) Euron was killed in a bloody brawl with Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in the penultimate episode.

Well, he did boast about sleeping with the love of Jaime’s life… who is Jaime’s twin sister. Actually, Thrones is weirder than Eurovision.

While Pilou will probably be staying up late on Sunday night to see who take the Iron Throne, we’re sure he’ll be doing the same on Saturday to find out who wins Eurovision.

Speaking to Sky News at the premiere of Game Of Thrones season eight, he suggested that Eurovision was way bigger than the HBO epic, saying: ‘Eurovision is the biggest thing in the world. I love the Eurovision. It’s like a week of partying, and I never say no to a party.’

A man after our own hearts.

The Eurovision Song Contest airs on BBC1 on Saturday night from 8pm.

Game Of Thrones airs on Sunday night in the US on HBO, and is simulcast on NOWTV and Sky Atlantic.
