I never noticed how much the silver-haired elves from The Lord of the Rings looked like Targaryens until they were worked into a House of the Dragon trailer…
As we speak, HBO is hard at work on House of the Dragon, its follow-up to Game of Thrones. Set over a hundred years before the original series, House of the Dragon will tell the tale of a Targaryen Civil War that tore the realm apart. It’s a story full of murder, betrayal, love, ambition and mid-air fire-fights. It could be really, really good.
It’s too early to have a trailer yet, although the casting process has begun. Happily, fans are picking up the slack. Quite ingeniously, YouTube’s own DarthNawaf has created a House of the Dragon trailer by starting with clips from Game of Thrones and pulling from other sources on top of that. Take a look:
I kind of love this. Not only does DarthNawaf bookend the trailer with official HBO logos, but they do a great job of choosing the perfect clips from other shows and movies so if you didn’t know what you were looking at you might actually think it were a legitimate trailer. I never thought about how much the elves from The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies look like Targaryens — what with their silver-blonde hair and regal bearings — until I saw them here. And using a shot of Charlize Theron as the evil queen from Snow White and the Huntsman is particularly inspired, since she’s a fan favorite to play Rhaenyra Targaryen in the actual show.
Or at least I think she’d be a good fit for Rhaenyra. It kind of feels like this trailer was made with me in mind, so no wonder I like it.
