When will The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, be released? It’s a question that has plagued fans for what seems like an eternity (actually seven years), and is a topic of much speculation and debate. Back in 2014, The Washington Post graphed out the problem, projecting George R.R. Martin’s writing speed into the future and predicting that Winds would be out in 2017:

Obviously, that didn’t pan out, perhaps because the Post’s model was too simple, assuming as it did that Martin’s writing pace would stay consistent with how it had been since the publication of A Storm of Swords back in 2000. (Yes, A Storm of Swords came out in 2000. Man, that’s forever ago.) Redditor King_of_Pyjamas has stepped things up and used a statistical process called regression analysis to make a new prediction.

So according to this model, The Winds of Winter should hit sometime between June 10, 2018 and May 5, 2019. We can deal with that.

Martin recently announced that he’s taking a step back from blogging to focus on “LOTS of exciting things.” R’hllor willing, one of those things involves the impending release of The Winds of Winter. And after that, the model predicts we can hunker down for a nearly 10-year wait for A Dream of Spring. Hooray.
