Just this morning, we were writing about some of the sets to be used on Bloodmoon, HBO’s follow-up to Game of Thrones. (No, we’re not sure that’s the final title, but we’re going with it until we hear something official.) Set thousands of years before the mainline story, Bloodmoon (George R.R. Martin prefers to call it The Long Night, FYI) is set during the Age of Heroes, and chronicles the first time Westeros plunged into darkness. There’s no Wall, no dragons, and no rules.

Well, I don’t know about that last part. Anyway, James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly — known for years as a man with access to the behind-the-scenes goings-on of Game of Throneswrites that filming on the pilot for Bloodmoon has officially begun. And we’re off!

Shooting is happening in Northern Ireland, which is par for the course; that’s where Thrones did the bulk of its filming. Will Bloodmoon shoot in other countries, as well, something else its predecessor did? We’re not sure. But if you see any people in armor flailing in front of a camera in your neck of the woods, give us a holler.

We don’t know much about Bloodmoon as of yet, but we do know who’s in it. Heavy hitters include Naomi Watts and Miranda Richardson, two excellent actors guaranteed to make the pilot at least worth watching. But there are plenty of unknowns, too, including Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Shiela Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley and Toby Regbo. Bunches of them have been showing up in the Belfast area just recently, so it’s no surprise to hear that filming has begun.

The showrunner is Jane Goodman. S.J. Clarkson is directing the pilot. You can find out more about the lot of them here.

Before we end, we have to emphasize that HBO is only filming a pilot. This show has not been ordered to series; HBO is taking its time and making sure it has something worth pursuing further. Best of luck to them.
