After the worldwide success of Game of Thrones, HBO is continuing the story by delving into the history of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Thankfully, George R.R. Martin had plenty of ideas ready to adapt for the screen (even if we’re still waiting for The Winds of Winter to come out). The network is turning Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood into a new prequel series called House of the Dragon. If the recently released production photos got you excited to head back to Westeros, you’ll be happy to know the book inspiring the show is now on sale on Amazon.
In Game of Thrones, we learned some of what happened in the past with Daenerys Targaryen’s family. But House of the Dragon will connect many of those dots and introduce characters we’ve only heard about, like Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, who will be played by Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy respectively.
Fire & Blood explores over 300 years of Targaryen history, starting with how the family survived the Doom of Valyria, settled on the island of Dragonstone, conquered Westeros and forged the Iron Throne. A large section is devoted to the the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which is the subject for House of the Dragon. Don’t expect Daenerys to show up, but her ancestors are plenty interesting on their own.
Fire and Blood is the first part in a two-part history of the family; however, in true Martin fashion, the second part hasn’t been released yet.
If you can’t wait for House of the Dragon to be released and want to dive into the Targaryen family origin story, Fire & Blood is now on sale on Amazon. This illustrated book features a detailed family tree, succession timeline, and drawings of dragons and characters by illustrator Doug Wheatley. The hardback ($21) and paperback ($17) versions of this book are both currently on sale.
