Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage is no stranger to starring in adaptations, but his latest movie role is a whole Seven Kingdoms away from his time as Tyrion Lannister.

As work on the new Thrones prequel gets underway – and fans prepare to usher in a new era of George RR Martin’s world – Peter Dinklage has been busy filming the latest adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac.

And now we have our first look at the intriguing new project.

The upcoming romance, directed by Atonement‘s Joe Wright and written by Erica Schmidt, is based on Schmidt’s stage musical of the same name, and re-tells the story of Cyrano de Bergerac with Dinklage as the lead.

Also starring The Girl on the Train‘s Haley Bennett, 12 Years a Slave‘s Kelvin Harrison Jr, Bashir Salahuddin, and Ben Mendelsohn, Cyrano is a classic unrequited love story.

“Too self-conscious to woo Roxanne himself, wordsmith Cyrano de Bergerac helps young Christian nab her heart through love letters,” the synopsis reads.

The first reviews for Cyrano, which is set for US release in December, remain undecided on whether the musical really hits the mark, with TheWrap admitting that it “doesn’t come together seamlessly”.

“This version of Cyrano [feels] so bittersweet, leaving the audience with a sense of what might have been,” they continue, while IndieWire‘s verdict is a little more direct: “Is it good? In parts!”

Variety, meanwhile, praise Dinklage’s performance as the lovelorn writer, saying: “Hollywood may have been slow to recognize it, but Dinklage truly merits leading-man status…

“Schmidt’s bespoke script plays to many of the star’s unique strengths – it’s a love letter the likes of which Rostand would no doubt approve.”

Taken with the “stunning” sets and costumes, The Hollywood Reporter gives Cyrano a more positive appraisal, declaring that the “charm and poignancy of the original text survive.”

Well, it sounds better than Game of Thrones‘ final season, at least.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. Spin-off House of the Dragon is now filming.
