FOX TV – Gwendoline Christie is happier in androgynous roles
She’s used to wearing battle armour in Game Of Thrones as Brienne of Tarth and Storm Trooper garb as Captain Phasma in Star Wars. And so Gwendoline Christie’s get-up for her latest Vogue shoot was a refreshing change for the actress, 39.And in her chat with the December issue of the British incarnation of the magazine – which is it’s first issue since new editor Edward Enninful took over the famous tome – Gwendoline has admitted her relief with her androgynous casting when it comes to her sci-fi roles.’When I was taken to the top-secret wardrobe department to see my Captain Phasma costume – a shiny, full-body suit of armour – I was truly electrified,’ Gwendoline told the publication of her Star Wars part.’Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had asked me if I’d ever Googled “female superheroes” and proceeded to show me the results: a plethora of scantily clad, cartoon-like women, and not a whole lot else.’The concept of a female character in a huge film like Star Wars, whose flesh we are denied from the outset, felt fresh and exciting. A suit of genderless armour for a female character shouldn’t have felt new, but it did.’On playing Brienne of Tarth she added: ‘During my training, I had been told that if we were very lucky as actors, we would one day come across a character who spoke to us, where we felt a strong connection with our own self. When I learned about the role of Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, I thought: “Can this really exist in a mainstream television show?”’For me, Brienne’s inner vulnerability coupled with her physical and moral strength, culminating in triumph for a typically marginalised female character, was enormously appealing.’As was the opportunity to portray a female character who possesses none of the classically beautiful attributes society worships in women; one who has an alternative, non-sexualised way of being as a female, where the pursuit of romantic love is not at her centre. She felt like a bolt of lightning.’The actress is seen in a strapless gown, springing up from a large bush of flowers in her Vogue shoot.Tucked away in a somewhat odd location [what appeared to be an industrial alleyway] the porcelain-skin star looks giddy as she throws her arms into the air and smiles knowingly down the lens. She wears her blonde locks in ringlets, held back by a headband, letting her pale complexion do the talking – offsetting things with a splash of rouge on her pout to match her elaborate dress. The gown itself features a spiked detailing along the chest, adding an extra dash of drama to the head-turning look. While the actress continues to star in Game Of Thrones, she will soon be seen in the next Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi, which hits cinemas on December 15.Gwendoline is a firm-favourite of Vogue’s – with her featuring during London Fashion Week in a chat about diversity. The new editor interviewed her, alongside Amara Karan and Jasmine Saunders about what diversity means and whether being different an advantag
