Surely you have multiple reasons to re-watch an entire series, or just sit through some random episodes of the evergreen sitcoms like FRIENDS or The Office US. Some shows such as Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, require multiple viewings to appreciate every minor detail. What makes a show re-watchable is surely a subjective thing but there is a consensus about select big-time shows. They are simply great to watch more than once and scrutinize thoroughly.
Let’s not define these shows by genre. Some comedies make you laugh, and give you so many quotable lines. There are fantasy shows that give us an escape from reality and take us to wonderlands. And then we have groundbreaking dramas that bring depth, brilliant plots and characters, and interesting backstories which we tend to miss in our first viewing. These shows include jokes, Easter eggs, references, and are filled with foreshadowing that we identify only after re-watching them. So let’s take a look at some of ‘The Rewatchables’ of all time:
1. ‘Breaking Bad’
1/7
In a TV landscape filled with antiheroes, Breaking Bad’s Walter White, a high-school chemistry teacher turned drug lord stands alone. The tale of Walter White, Jesse Pinkman, and bright blue meth is still as captivating now as it was when it first aired. This is the show which will require some intense hours of re-watching and not just tuning in for a sneak peek into a random episode. This show deserves serious re-runs. It offers us thematic elements, beautifully written character developments, and gorgeous directional choices, all of which contributes to how re-watchable this series is. All five seasons are streaming on Netflix.
2. ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S’
2/7
Like the other comedies on this list, this is an easy show to just pick an episode and start watching. Friends is one show we randomly watch when we have no other ongoing series that we are binging. The series has its own language and fans can’t get enough of all the inside jokes! This band of our all-time favorite six New Yorkers, sitting on the iconic orange couch in Central Perk, engaging in non-stop banter, can be watched in India on Comedy Central and Netflix.
3. ‘Game of Thrones’
3/7
This one runs deep. It must be re-watched. There’s no way you can fully appreciate things like the death of John Arryn or the poisoning of Joffrey without seeing the show at least twice. Although the finale angered and disappointed many fans, Game of Thrones was more than just a show – it was a social and controversial lifeline for almost all of us. Everything about the show, from its exotic locations to super expensive costumes of cast members, to the groundbreaking editing and visual effects, to create an entire language just for the world of Westeros, is beyond commendable. The entire series has many incredibly cool Easter eggs which, not surprisingly, are missed in the first watch. There’s so much more! The foreshadowing, hidden subtle jokes, and references, all of it makes it worthy of a re-watch. Reignite your passion for Westeros and have a re-run of Game of Thrones, streaming on Disney+ Hostar.
4. ‘How I Met Your Mother’
4/7
“Hands down, my favourite show is How I Met Your Mother“, said one of the greatest filmmaker, Quentin Tarantino!
While the series finale received a lot of backlashes – sticking the landing is the hardest thing a show as great as HIMYM had to do – the entire series taught us all about friendship and transitioning through tough moments in our life. Probably this is the show you started binge-watching back in the days. And who doesn’t want to see five close friends sitting at a bar in New York City, having fun banter amongst themselves? This is one show you’d want to revisit once in a while and indulge in some nostalgia of the good old days when you first watched the show. The series is currently airing in India on Star World and Disney+ Hotstar.
5. ‘Seinfeld’
5/7
Surprisingly, this show about ‘nothing’ has quite a bit that keeps us coming back for more. We have Jerry Seinfeld & Co. What we most love about the show is that the characters are not superficially nice or even exceptionally good people. They’re real people who have flaws and they make mistakes which makes the show more interesting and brilliantly hilarious. The show is too quotable, too absurd, and absolutely high on relatability to watch just once! The entire series can be watched on Prime Video.
6. ‘The Office’
6/7
The Office stands alone as a marque modern comedy. This show endeared itself to us by introducing a slew of beloved characters for fans to identify with. The joke writing on The Office is stellar, and re-watching the show will make you funnier, guaranteed! It’s a hilarious show to reference to and the jokes don’t ever get old. This show which did not gain immediate attention was probably taken as just another example of a US network trying to rip off an edgy Brit-com and getting it all wrong. Except, with Steve Carell playing Michael Scott, the world’s worst boss, it turned out to be a groundbreaking series, with a dream team of the most eccentric employees lost in the cubicles of Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company. While the show’s first season didn’t hit the chords, it picked up tremendously from season two and now, many of the loyal fans engage in re-watching some of the classic episodes, again and again! The entire series is streaming on Prime Video. The show also airs in India on Star World.
7. ‘The Simpsons’
7/7
This one is perhaps the greatest show to just pick a random episode and re-watch. To remind you, we are talking about the longest-running prime-time television series! The Simpsons, which gained massive success and cult following since its premiere in 1989, has over 600 episodes spanning 31 seasons! This is the show that laid the foundation for many animated series that followed, and have now gained their massive fan following. With a barrage of references, this series that has absurdly random jokes and satirical plots would stump even the most ardent pop culture genius. Not only that, but the cartoon series also affected our vocabulary – Cromulent, embiggen, yoink, craptacular, and of course d’oh all sprang forth from The Simpsons writers’ room. Watch the show currently airing in India on Star World and Disney+ Hotstar.
