I think Jaime was trying to create a lot of Chaos between the stark Banner men. He killed Lord Karstark's (the guy who lost his son), which caused tensions between him and Catelyn, and then he tried to provoke Catelyn, trying to get her to kinda hurt him or do something, which would've made Robb angry. Say what you want about Jaime, but he is a smart man. Arrogant, but smart.
