The books are great
However I would treat them as different entities
And not treat them as one thing
Just a note about reading the books at the same time you're watching the show: for me personally when I did this, I started getting confused between what was on the show, and what was happening in the books, lol. It might not be the same for other people, but that was what happened to me. Maybe though if you jot down what's happening in either the show, or the books, or both.. it'll help.

You can read the first two books, season 3 and 4 cover book 3.
I would say start the books now. They’re very long( but worth it!) and you have a big enough leap in the show where you won’t be spoiled by the books , only enriched
The Series of books is called
“ A Song of Ice and Fire” by George RR Martin
Book 1 is “A Game of Thrones”
Book 2 is “A Clash of Kings”
Book 3 is “A Storm of Swords”
Book 4 is “A Feast for Crows”
Book 5 is “A Dance with Dragons”
Book 6 is “ The Winds of Winter” ( not out yet)
Book 7 Will be “ A Dream of Spring”
Season 1 pretty much goes along with book 1 pretty closely
Season 2 is based on Book 2 but has some more differences
Season 3 and 4 or based on book 3 ( big book!)
Season 5 is loosely based on book 4 and 5
Season 6 the show runners were flying solo with no source material except a few things that GRRM told them. But those things aren’t even 100% confirmed. Season 7 is also only the show writers.
I think you’d also like how the chapters in the books work!

You can read the first book without getting spoiled on anything. Also I am really looking forward to episode 4, I know you are gonna love it. But episode 9 is gonna be a tough one to get through.

I think its ok to read book 1. It will give you a better understanding of all the names and how everyone is connected etc.
Has anyone told you about the History and Lore videos? I think they are as equally important as the show itself. It gives you a ton of history and backstory that will help you better understand many of the current events. There is one for each season, but you should watch them AFTER you complete the season, as not to be spoiled about anything. These are for seasons one and two:

Season 1 is book 1 and season 2 is book two but I think they split the story for season 3 so book 3's story stretches into season 4.
you can read at least the first three by the time you get to book three you will have seen the show so no spoiler
