  1. In the "Game of Thrones" universe, the Lord of Light does indeed work in mysterious ways. Here in this scene, as Mance Rayder was burning alive, Jon Snow mercifully ended Rayder's suffering by shooting an arrow straight through his heart. As the Lord of Light would have it, Tormund was present in this scene to witness Jon Snow's act of mercy towards Mance Rayder. In turn, this allowed Tormund to honestly vouch for Jon's credibility/honor while Jon was in the process of trying to convince the Wildings at Hardhome to board Stannis' ships to evacuate south of the wall. This, in turn, convinced and allowed at least several thousand Wildings to avoid death at the hands of the Army of the Dead.

If Mance had instead chosen to "bend the knee" to Stannis, all of the Wildings north of the Wall would have simply viewed Mance as a "sellout" not worth listening to.

  2. Mance was a dumbass for not bending
Because of this decision 70,000 wildling hot slaughtered at Hardhome
Thankfully Jon learned from his mistake and has Danys armies to save the north

  3. this really reminds me of when jaime is talking to ned and says 500 people stood by and watched his father burn, and here while everyone is standing by jon takes action and defies the king to do the right thing. jon snow is truly a great man

  4. Looking back on this conversation, it is a haunting echo of Jon's conversation with Daenerys about why he will not bend the knee. Jon saw only pride in Mance's decision not to kneel, while Dany sees the same in Jon's decision. Jon didn't understand Mance then, but his decision not to pledge himself and his people to a Southern cause (Dany's war against Cersei) shows that he understands him now.
