Game of Thrones actor Joe Dempsie swapped the small screen for the stage when he shared some of his acting secrets with students from a city school.

The star, whose TV career began playing Chris Mile in the E4 teen drama Skins, took part in a workshop with pupils from The Bemrose School, in Uttoxeter New Road.

Joe, who hails from West Bridgford, in Nottingham, returned to the East Midlands to take part in the event at Derby Theatre, alongside Lewis Arnold, the director of award-winning drama Broadchurch and Humans.

Pupils from year 8 at the school were invited to the event to learn more about the broad range of career paths in the creative industry, which currently employs three million people in the UK.

The school’s careers guidance and work experience lead at the school, Claire Pavitt, said: “The children were able to learn about the broad range of careers paths in theatre including lighting, acting and costume design.

“They were able to go backstage and meet professionals from all the different departments and they thoroughly enjoyed their first experience of theatreland.

“They asked lots of questions and were interested to find out more about the routes into the different careers and what subjects the professionals had studied at school. I was very proud of them all.”

Pupils were also given an insight into what it might be like to be a casting director, lighting designer, make-up artist and camera operator. And they were even able to try on costumes and demonstrate their own creativity by taking part in various challenges.

Ms Pavitt added: “The whole event really helped to get our young people inspired and armed them with plenty of information and inside tips which will aid them in pursuing a career in this industry.

“The workshops helped our students, who can sometimes lack self-belief, to realise that these kinds of jobs are possible and it puts their learning into perspective, providing them with a clear end goal.”
