GAME Of Thrones star Aidan Gillen has revealed that he doesn’t think anybody will end up on the Iron Throne as the fantasy series races towards its grand finale.

The actor, who played Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Baelish in the show, also refused to rule out a popular fan theory that his character wasn’t really killed last season and is set to make a shock return.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online, Aidan appeared excited to tune in to the final series of Thrones, which launches next month, but when asked who he thinks will win the game at the end, he had a very unique take.

The 50-year-old star explained: “I don’t think that is going to be how it ends.

“I would like to think that at their finest moments, the creators of the show have managed to pull off things that are shocking and surprising and fantastic and heartbreaking, so I would like to think somewhere along those lines is where we are left.

“It’s got to be surprising.

“It might be too straight forward to think there is a winner to the game, it feels like the stakes on that front changed along the way.

“It started off as one kind of quest and ended up as another.”

He added: “I certainly don’t have a favourite, or a very concrete idea of what it should be or could be.”

But coy Aidan had less to say when asked about the theory that his character was actually a Faceless Man in disguise when murdered by Arya and Sansa Stark last season, refusing to divulge any information.

He told us: “A lot of people have been talking about that theory, it is interesting, it’s a good one.

“But I can’t give anything away.”

Aidan, who first shot to fame as Stuart Jones in groundbreaking Channel 4 series Queer As Folk in 1999, has stepped away from the fantasy world of Westeros for his latest TV role, starring as Dr. Allen Hynek in SyFy series Project Blue Book, which is based on the true investigations into UFOs in the 1950s.

The new series follows the men who worked on the real Project Blue Book – a series of secret studies into UFOs carried out by the US air force – and the government’s reaction and public hysteria to otherworldly sightings.

Aidan told us that it was playing evil Littlefinger for so many years that encouraged him to sign up for the role – admitting that his mother is always happier when he is playing a “good guy”.

When asked what drew him to Dr. Hynek, the Irish actor candidly shared: “Playing the good guy, which is something I was actively looking to do after spending a number of years playing a villain, or at least a malevolent yet charming character, on Game of Thrones.

“I have played a lot of nice people before but it is the villains that people seem to have noticed.”

He continued: “My mother is always happy if I am playing a nice person, or smiling.

“She tells me to smile, she says ‘as long as you smile everything will be okay’.”

Although Project Blue Book is based on a real story, Aidan teased that the show does have some similarity to Game Of Thrones in terms of the “ravishing” special effects, which he admitted blew him away.

Speaking with passion, he explained: “There is a sequence towards the end, an airbourne sequence, that is quite stunning.

“Special effects aren’t overdone in this show but there is a pretty spectacular scene in one of the latter episodes, it was as good as anything I have seen on TV.

“It was similar to something you would see in Game of Thrones, for example.

“Visually, it is pretty ravishing and authentic to the palettes that we associated to the genre of 1950s Americana sci-fi world.”

And delving into Dr. Hynek’s real-life case files and “real footage of strange objects in the sky” opened Aidan’s mind to the idea that we are not alone in the universe – a concept that he admits he has always been “fascinated” with.

He told us: “I have had a healthy scepticism, that scepticism including being sceptical that we are alone in the universe, which is kind of unlikely.

“I also know how unlikely it is that we could find each other, we are not in any position to find any civilisation on other planets physically but maybe through radio signals we could, again unlikely –  but not impossible.

“I have never felt that we were alone in the universe [but] some ideas that Hynek had were interesting, which is stuff that would not have occurred to me but have presented themselves to me through research he had.”

He poignantly added: “A lot of these reports are based on people that are so convincing and so reliable and have stuck to the same story for all of their lives.

“If it’s not true, or it didn’t happen, they seem to think it did… So why is that?”

Project Blue Book premieres on Wednesday 27th March at 9pm on SYFY UK
