Just how many trophy cabinets do the Game of Thrones producers have these days?

The HBO show may be preparing to say goodbye – to its original format, anyway – next year, but that doesn’t mean that big nights of celebration are set to be ending for the GoT showrunners anytime soon.

Tonight’s Primetime Emmy Awards 2018 could see the fantasy show equalling its own record for the most Emmy wins by a series in a single season.

That’s a staggering 12 awards – which, quite madly, they already achieved at both the 2015 and 2016 Emmy ceremonies.

GoT is nominated 22 times across the prize-giving organisation’s various categories – but how can that add up to a number which equals the show’s existing record amount of Emmy wins?

Well, Thrones has already triumphed in seven of the 15 awards it is up for this year following the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony last weekend, which is held prior to the main event to celebrate the less, er, high-profile awards.

That means that GoT will be present in seven more categories this evening – but, because the show has been double-nominated in two of the categories, that means it can only win a possible 12 Emmys overall.

Got it? Good – we’ve just about caught up with the maths, too.

Will GoT manage to equal the record, then? All will be revealed later tonight – stay tuned to Metro.co.uk for all the latest Emmys news.
