The author behind the biggest TV series in history has slammed Donald Trump, saying the US president “disgraced” the office in his first debate with Democrat opponent Joe Biden.
“(Donald Trump) took a piss all over democracy,” he wrote.
Martin, who turned 72 this month, said he had seen every televised US presidential debate in history, and that Mr Trump’s behaviour during the debate was unprecedented.
He claimed it would have been beyond the pale for even some of the most polarising figures in the history of the presidential race.
“It is not a question of Democrat v Republican, or Liberal v Conservative,” Martin wrote.
“(Richard) Nixon would not have behaved as Trump did. Ronald Reagan would not have done so. Nor (Dwight) Eisenhower, nor John McCain, nor Barry Goldwater.”
Martin said Mr Trump’s performance was “not that of a president”.
“This was the behavior of a schoolyard bully, an obnoxious child, the tinpot strongman of some third world dictatorship.”
Both Mr Trump and Mr Biden were criticised for their demeanour and deportment following the debate, though CNN polls indicated viewers believed Mr Biden came off better.
Mr Biden’s campaign reported that the candidate and former vice-president brought in a record amount of funds during the chaotic debate – with US$3.8 million ($5.28 million) raised in one hour, Politico reported.
