Quite a few TV shows turn out to be successful in their run but very few manage to set the benchmarks for others to follow. Game of Thrones was one such show. It was one of its kind and it offered something that viewers had not seen before. Hence, when The Witcher, a Netflix show tried to venture out in similar, unfamiliar territory the comparisons were inevitable.

We had recently reported about the surprising connection between The Witcher and Game of Thrones. The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich recently talked to Gamesradar about more parallels between the two shows. Read on!

On being asked about the frequent comparisons with HBO’s show, Hissrich replied:

The comparison is ultimately incredibly flattering, because at the end of the day, for a new television show to be premiering into a world, and for people to be saying, ‘I think it could be as successful or as popular as that other show’ — that’s incredible.”

Hissrich also credited Game of Thrones for opening the door for a fantasy show like hers on television. She said:

“I feel like as a writer, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Game of Thrones because it really blew open the doors for fantasy on television. And it took it away from being a genre that has mostly been dominated by men and sort of been seen as this niche audience of geeks and nerds, and it word of allowed a whole worldwide audience to say, ‘Fantasy is for us as well.’”

It’s one thing having a similar premise as a hugely successful show and another to become as successful. The Witcher’s first season is available for streaming on Netflix now.
