George RR Martin penned the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, which inspired Game of Thrones’ TV adaptation. As things stand, five of the planned seven books have been released, with two to go. But last year, the author also released a companion book – Fire and Blood – which seems to highlight an issue with a late season seven episode of the show. Reddit user ft5777’s discovery has been 89% Upvoted on Reddit.
They wrote: “I am currently reading Fire and Blood and I arrived at this passage when the king and the queen wanted to fly very quickly from King’s Landing to Oldtown.”
The quote from the book reads: “’Even for a dragon, the flight from King’s Landing to Oldtown is a long one. The king and queen stopped twice along the way, once at Bitterbridge and once at Highgarden, resting overnight and taking counsel with their lords.'”
The fan added: “That is further proof that the whole plot of season 7 episode 6 with ravens going from Eastwatch to Dragonstone, and then Daenerys flying from Dragonstone to North of the Wall in less than 24 hours was complete nonsense and stupid.”
The post currently has a huge score of 6.2k on the A Song of Ice and Fire Subreddit.
One person replied: “Not that we needed confirmation, but nice find.”
Another said: “Beyond The Wall was a terrible episode in general. The Wight hunt stuff was just ridiculous.”
Someone else joked: “Yeah but show dragons have powerful jet engines inside of them, that’s why drogon fire has such kinetic impact.”
George RR Martin is currently penning The Winds of Winter, the sixth book, and there’s an additional dragon issue that fans have said they want answering.
In a post that has been 94% Upvoted, Redditor Express_Bath started an intriguing discussion about Dany’s relationship to the beasts – specifically her control over them – and how differently that could play out in the books compared to the show.
They pointed out that, in Fire and Blood, “especially during the Dance of Dragons… despite having a lot of dragons, whenever they count the number available, it is number of dragons with their rider”.
This, as the theorist pointed out, “implies that despite having the dragons here, present at Dragonstone, the Targaryens are not able to control them or to send them into fight.”
However, they went on: “In the show, we see several times Daenerys flying them with her to battle, and they don’t even seem to need orders from her.”
So the question is: will Dany control the three dragons in The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring like she could in the small-screen episodes?
A release date for The Winds of Winter is not yet set, but Martin recently hinted it will arrive by next summer, 2020, at the latest.
