Game Of Thrones star Carice van Houten thinks the #MeToo movement led to less nudity on the show.
Carice’s character Melisandre aka The Red Woman, was one of the many, many characters to get naked on Game Of Thrones.
With the rise of #MeToo on social media, which has seen people speaking out about sexual harassment and abuse, the actress believes the show took the social climate on board.
Asked by Deadline if she felt uncomfortable baring all, she replied: ‘Yes and no. It wasn’t my favourite thing in the world at all.
‘But yes, in [Paul Verhoeven’s 2006 film] Black Book, I experienced nudity on set. The Dutch are quite open minded, we’re a bit easier with that.
‘But it’s never comfortable being the only one undressed on set. It was before I had a child. I would be more uncomfortable now.
‘The times have changed in many ways. Back then, it was all a little overwhelming. No one forced me into anything, but in hindsight, I might have been a little more cautious with it.’
#MeToo, which rose to public consciousness during Game Of Thrones’ run, was brought up, with Deadline commenting that the fewer scenes of nudity in later seasons was ‘a reaction to that changing climate’.
Carice replied: ‘Yes. It also showed that you don’t need it.’
Melisandre was killed off in the final season, in the episode The Long Night, and thinks her character’s exit was ‘graceful’.
‘I was very grateful to the writers for that,’ she said. ‘That whole episode was bombastic but my death was like the final note of a symphony.’
Game Of Thrones is available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
