For HBO epic fantasy hit series Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were more of a behind-the-scenes duo, very much involved in the scripting process instead of putting their faces out front. With the impending release of the highly-anticipated Westworld: Season 3, that’s about to change.
According to The Wrap, the showrunners are set to make a cameo in the second episode titled The Winter Line, where they will be reportedly swapping out their tinkering with scripts for androids as Delos technicians.
Delos, in the sci-fi world, is the mastermind corporation responsible for the expansion and operation of Westworld, Shogun World, and other robot-run theme parks that steal the information of guests by scanning their brains. Additionally, the company has been working in secret to achieve immortality through human mind transfer to the body of a Host as well.
So yes, it’s all pretty illegal and questionable. It’s unclear what Benioff’s and Weiss’ role entails, but considering how Dolores is now on the outside world for the first time, everything is very much unpredictable. Our guess? Perhaps something involving a historical-fantasy park, or the appearance of a dragon – you know, with the cue to Game of Thrones.
Nonetheless, the mystery will be unveiled soon as the second episode prepares for its debut on 22 March 2020. The new eight-episode season also looks set to focus on the Hosts breaking free of their Delos prison to exact revenge on their human counterparts in the real world, which means plenty of action and intrigue can be expected.
The showrunners’ return to HBO comes after an extremely lacklustre conclusion to Game of Thrones, as well as a cancelled follow-up to the fantasy series. While their involvement may gather some mixed feelings, it’d be good to keep the judgement for scripting and acting (little as it might be) separate.
Westworld: Season 3 premieres on HBO on 15 March 2020.
