The creators of the Game Of Thrones HBO series, David Benioff and DB Weiss are adding their might to the Star Wars world, now that their current TV show is coming to a close.

Why stop with one massive franchise, when you can leapfrog to another without a second’s pause, right?

The whole shebang is an expansion on the already booming Disney/Lucasfilm world, which currently has the Luke Skywalker saga drawing to a close with Rian Johnson’s own galactic offering Star Wars: Episode IX next year.

However, director Johnson has announced he’s releasing another three films in a fresh Star Wars series, meaning we’ll have six films of this world being released over the coming decade.

‘David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,’ said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, in a statement, according to Variety. ‘Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.’

The showrunners added in their own statement: ‘In the summer of 1977 we travelled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since.

‘We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.’

Disney CEO Bob Inger told Variety that the two men approached the company ‘a while ago’, wanting to branch out from their TV roots, as the eighth series of Game Of Thrones prepared to hit screens in April.

‘Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars based,’ he said. ‘To my knowledge they didn’t express interest about a [TV] series.’

It’s not known when production will kick off on this fresh Star Wars take, but the lads were thought to be busy working on their HBO series Confederate, which caused a stir of controversy with the storyline surrounding the idea the American Civil War ended in a stalemate and slavery remained legal.

According to HBO President Casey Bloys, there is a delay on the show specifically due to the new deal, as they told TVLine: ‘The delay has to do with [the fact] that they were offered three [Star Wars] movies.’
