Spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 4 below.
Game of Thrones season eight only has two episodes left as fans are still reeling from Missandei and Rhaegal’s deaths in episode four, not to mention Sansa’s betrayal and now fan think the season one credits have unearthed a secret about her.
No sooner had Jon (Kit Harington) told his sisters the truth about his parentage did Sansa (Sophie Turner) spill to Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) casting doubt on Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) claim to the Iron Throne.
But now some eagle-eyed Redditors noticed something unusual in the season one credits.
Beside each actor’s name is their house sigil; the Stark direworlf is next to Maisie Williams and Richard Madden, but there’s a dragon beside Sophie Turner.
Reddit user BatSpock359 pointed out this anomaly yesterday, getting a huge response on the site.
Ok, we know this is a long time ago, but small details in Game of Thrones are very deliberate so we’re not ruling anything out.
But realistically, (yes we know it’s a fantasy show) how would this be possible – there’s never been any indication that Sansa’s parents weren’t Ned (Sean Bean) and Catelyn (Michelle Fairley).
Another Reddit user pointed out that HBO let the cast pick their favourite sigils back in season one which accounts for why Sophie has a dragon, she just liked the look of them back in 2011.
The concept of ‘secret Targaryens’ and ‘Targaryen pretenders’ are explored at length in the A Song of Ice and Fire books, however, which give some credence to this notion.
Book-readers will be aware of a character called Young Griff who is actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell, Aegon Targaryen (not Jon).
But Sansa turning out to be a secret Targaryen would be really wild and make no sense at all.
Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5 airs on HBO, Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on Sunday and Monday.
