***Spoilers for Game Of Thrones ahead, read with caution***
It has been five days since the Game Of Thrones’ finale rocked the world and an extra week since we watched Daenery’s Targaryen unleash her rage on King’s Landing killing thousands of innocent people.
The Mother of Dragons took her last remaining dragon, Drogon, on a ride to burn down the capital city of the Seven Kingdoms.
While some fans felt this character arc in Emilia Clarke’s character was out of the blue, others may remember that it was foreshadowed in season five by Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney).
In an episode aired back in 2015, the show hints at a possibility of her edging towards a mixture of insanity or tyranny.
It’s well established that madness is a trait throughout the Targaryen line, with Daenerys’ father Aerys earning the nickname ‘the Mad King’, especially after an attempt to blow up King’s Landing with underground storage of green wildfire.
The scene where Ser Barristan retells the story to Daenerys definitely mirrors the penultimate episode of the entire show.
Barristan told Daenerys: ‘I served in his Kingsguard. I was at his side from the first. Your enemies did not lie.
‘When the people rose and revolted against him, your father set their towns and castles aflame. He murdered sons in front of their fathers.
‘He burned men alive with wildfire and laughed as they screamed. And his efforts to stamp out dissent led to a rebellion that killed every Targaryen, except two.’
When she said that she wasn’t her father, Barristan said: ‘But the Mad King gave his enemies the justice he thought they deserved. And each time it made him feel powerful and right — until the very end.’
Daenerys’s main goal throughout the entire show has been taking the Iron Throne back for the Targaryens after it was usurped by Robert Baratheon.
Her journey to get to King’s Landin has been questionable. For example, she burned the masters in Astapor, destroyed fleets at Slaver’s Bay, killed thousands of Lannister/Tyrell forces during the Loot Train Attack, and executed the members of House Tarly via dragonfire.
Granted these people were here enemies and not innocent people standing in the way between her and her iron throne.
The idea of this generational curse is not out of this world as Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) recalled in the finale: ‘Every time a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin.’ They’re either sane or insane.
This foreshadowing has either gone over the heads of loyal viewers – or they are just unsatisfied – as many still signed a petition calling for HBO to remake season eight.
The petition, which has garnered millions of supporters, reads: ‘Remake Game Of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers’ was created in response to the fourth episode of the series, The Last Of The Starks, which saw the death of a number of characters including Daenerys’ much-loved dragon Rhaegal and friend Missandei.
To celebrate the popularity of the Change.org page, its creator Dylan D posted an update to clarify his position on his hopes for the appeal and it turns out he doesn’t actually believe the channel will take his advice.
‘I made this petition some few days after Episode 4, “The Last of the Starks”, aired. I was just so disappointed and angry. It was simply me venting a bit,’ he wrote.
‘I don’t think people can reasonably expect HBO to completely remake the season, or any part of this particular series (keep in mind the prequel spinoffs).
‘It costs a fortune to shoot one episode, and I think most signers understand that. Will HBO lose gobs of money over this? Eh probably not. As Heath Ledger’s Joker once said, “It’s not about the money, it’s about sending a message”.’
