A GAME of Thrones deleted storyline planned for Tyrion Lannister to lead the brutal siege on Winterfell.
The alternative ending would have meant Tyrion, played by Peter Dinklage, would have been responsible for burning the Starks’ home to the ground.
Over the course of the HBO show‘s eight seasons, viewers warmed to Tyrion’s witty character – he also ended up being the only prominent member of the Lannister clan to survive all the drama.
But it has been revealed that author George R.R. Martin had a very different plan for the character, while writing the books the series is based on.
Instead it was planned for him to follow the path of Theon Greyjoy, (played by actor Alfie Allen) who constantly moved between good and evil.
This means viewers would have seen Tyrion attack the ancestral home of the Starks and burn Winterfell to the ground – instead of Theon.
They would also have seen Tyrion hold Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) and his brother Rickon (Art Parkinson) hostage, and him being betrayed by his own men and captured by Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon).
But of course in the story as we know it, this is Theon’s tale to tell.
Thrones author George R.R. Martin recently teased a 2021 release date for his Winds of Winter sequel.
The 71-year-old revealed in a new blog post that he’s ‘in an actual cabin in the mountains’ during isolation, which has actually helped him get lots of work done on his new novel.
He wrote: “I am spending long hours every day on the Winds of Winter, and making steady progress.
“I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week.”
