Game of Thrones ended with Sansa Stark (played by Sophie Turner) fulfilling her role as Queen of the North after it became an independent kingdom. Many HBO fans were pleased to see her take the crown but were shocked by this turn of events. Did you spot this huge clue hinting at what was going to happen?
Season eight of Game of Thrones ended with Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) on the Iron Throne, becoming the ruler of Westeros.
However, he was not to become the leader of the seven kingdoms after Sansa Stark revealed that she would keep the North as an independent kingdom.
During the scene in Dragonpit, the other representatives of the kingdoms of Westeros said they were happy for Bran to have the crown.
Sansa then says to Bran: “I love you little brother, I always will. You’ll be a good king.
“But tens of thousands of men fell in the Great War, defending all of Westeros and those who survived have seen too much and fought too hard ever to kneel again.
“The North will remain an independent kingdom, as it was for thousands of years.”
In the final few moments of the HBO show, fans saw her crowned as the queen of the new independent kingdom.
Now fans have uncovered that the hints were always there that this would happen in series eight.
User farrukhsshah posted on Reddit two photos from the series – one of the map of Westeros shown during the Battle of King’s Landing and one during the opening credits.
In both images, a clear crack can be seen between the North and the southern kingdoms in Westeros.
They wrote: “The crack that appeared on the map of Westeros during the Battle of King’s Landing foreshadowed the eventual split between the North and South Kingdoms.”
In response to the post, others pointed out that the symbolism of where characters stand on the map extends beyond just this revelation.
Another user Midnite_st0rm posted: “Also, the crack goes through the compass rose to ‘Break the wheel’ and when Jaime and Cersei reunite, they are standing on the Twins.”
The former refers to Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) determination throughout the series to break the wheel of power in the ruling of Westeros.
Jamie (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei (Lena Headey) are also, of course, twins in the show so this makes for a nice symbolism when they stand on The Twins.
The opening credits were also a fruitful source of potential Easter Eggs in the show as Ned Umber’s (Harry Grasby) death was also alluded to.
In the credits for episode one, the Last Hearth turned to ice, which is where Ned was killed in the opening episode.
More Easter Eggs could be hidden in the final series of the show, waiting for eagle-eyed fans to find them.
Now that the final series has been aired of the show, HBO has revealed they will be producing a prequel show.
Currently entitled Bloodmoon, the prequel is created by author George R.R. Martin and Jane Goldman and is set thousands of years before the current series.
Filming for the Game of Thrones prequel has begun
