Game Of Thrones director Alan Taylor has confirmed the death of Benjen Stark, following his abrupt end in episode Beyond The Wall.
While it proved perhaps the most divisive episode in season seven, Jon Snow’s battle against the White Walkers was one of the show’s most flashy episodes to date – packing huge dragons, masses of enemies and even flaming swords.
One of the big questions left hanging however was the fate of Jon Snow’s uncle Benjen Stark, who triumphantly saved his life while seemingly sacrificing his own.
After being swarmed by Wights however, it was unclear whether Benjen could live to fight another day, but now the episode’s director has officially confirmed his passing.
Speaking on the DVD commentary for episode Beyond The Wall (via JOE), Taylor quietly states ‘he meets his end here.’
Exactly what Benjen’s ‘end’ means however could be open to interpretation, with Benjen having previously been stabbed by a White Walker and saved from becoming a Wight thanks to some trusty dragonglass into the heart.
With this in my mind, it’s unknown in the show’s mythology whether Benjen could return as a Wight and become an enemy to Jon Snow’s cause.
Game Of Thrones also has previous history resurrecting characters, so maybe Benjen could return and secretly be the answer to all the power struggle problems in Westeros?
Alright, he’s probably dead.
Game Of Thrones final season is expected to release in 2019.
