Many devoted viewers of the show are still haunted by the controversy surrounding season 8 of Game of Thrones. Even though filming on HBO’s financially successful mint finished almost four years ago, talk about it still continues. Ultimately, a contentious and hurriedly concluded season caused the enormously popular and groundbreaking show to split its fan base. However, there are some who still defend the controversial finale.

Matt Shakman defends season 8 and showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff

Most Game of Thrones fans blame the showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for the final season disaster, but there are some who don’t consider it a failure at all. One of them is director Matt Shakman, who directed 2 episodes of season 7. Addressing the controversy, he told Inverse,

“I think those guys are brilliant and I think they finished telling the story they intended to tell. I know that it was divisive, but I would never want to say anything about how they could have done something better.”

Game of Thrones fans still rant to Bella Ramsey about Season 8

In one of their visits to the Jimmy Fallon show, Ramsey revealed, “People like to ask me what I thought of the ending. And I ask them back, “What did you think of it?” I don’t know, I don’t have an opinion. I just let them either hate on it or talk about how great it was — mostly hate on the ending for like 10 minutes, and then I just sit there and listen and then say, “Goodbye, nice to meet you,” and then that’s it. Generally, the consensus is that it wasn’t great… It seemed fine to me.
