The trailer for The Last Watch, a documentary about Season 8 production on Game of Thrones, shows the emotional slog to the end.
Kit Harrington is seen welling up at the final table read while stars including Maisie Williams, Peter Dinklage and Sophie Turner gathered to hear their characters’ fate.
The two-hour behind the scenes film will air the week after the sixth and final episode, next Sunday night, as the series comes to a long-awaited conclusion after eight years.
The script read seemed to get a whoop and a holler from the HBO series’ biggest stars, even though there was some palpable sadness in the room.
Actor Conleth Hill was seen wrapping a supportive hand around Gwendoline Christie’s shoulder, while co-creator D.B. Weiss said it felt like looking around the room at family.
The documentary takes fans through the making of the episodes, from the mechanics of making each scene to never-before-seen interactions between the actors.
A statement released by the network in March revealed: ‘Made with unprecedented access, Game of Thrones: The Last Watch is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production.
‘It follows the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers.
‘Much more than a “making of” documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it.’
It’s the last drop we’ll be getting out of Series 8 after the finale airs on Sunday 19 May in the US and Monday in the UK.
Unfortunately, the final episode has to come a long way to impress some tough critics, since the penultimate installment, Episode 5, was officially the most slated of all time.
