Game of Thrones fans were left utterly shocked in the final moments of season eight this year.
After Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) killed off Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), he – and the show’s viewers – expected him to be incinerated by Drogon, her last remaining dragon.
However in one final twist, Drogon simply melted the Iron Throne with his fire breath, picked up Daenerys’s body, and flew off into the distance, never to be seen again.
While many theories have been concocted surrounding this event, one dedicated fan on Reddit seems to have connected Drogon’s actions with a similar experience he had back in season four.
Back when Daenerys was stationed in Mereen, she received word that Drogon had killed a local farmer’s young daughter.
This set off a chain of events which lead to Daenerys locking up her three dragons in an attempt to keep the residents of Mereen safe.
However she failed to keep Drogon locked up, as he flew away, as pointed out by Redditor ladynymeria1.
They wrote: “Why did he disappear? He was gone before Rhaegal and Viserion were chained in the tombs beneath Mereen, so that wasn’t a factor.
“I have an explanation… guilt. He felt bad. He knew what he had done was wrong.
“Think about it. He had only killed murderers, tormentors, in defence of his mother. He had never harmed a child.”

The Reddit user went on to talk about the events of season eight’s episode five The Bells, where Drogon was told to destroy King’s Landing.
Putting these two events together, the viewer then explained: “If this dragon was capable of enough guilt at killing one little girl imagine the torment at citywide annihilation.
“I believe that was first conveyed at his initial sighting of Jon coming to the ruins of the Red Keep.
“Drogon had always conveyed dominance towards Jon. Not this time. That is also why I believe that he allowed Jon to live, following the death of his mother. He knew the act was justified.”
They concluded: “The Iron Throne truly was what killed her… and her child knew that better than anyone.”
If this truly is the reason Drogon flew away, it is no wonder he didn’t return to the show after the drastic events that occurred.
What’s more, fans of the show are convinced Jon would have been able to avoid being imprisoned at The Wall after killing the Queen if he announced his heritage.
Season seven saw Jon finding out he was a secret Targaryen – and this could have helped him get out of becoming a prisoner.
But would Deanerys’s supporters have allowed Jon to reclaim the throne for himself just by announcing his lineage?
