Game Of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke has defended Daenerys’ less-than-bothered reaction to the discovery that she was her boyfriend’s aunt.
She was too busy worried about the fact she was no longer the first in line to the throne, which is a bit of a bummer.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms threw a lot of curveballs at us, but the knowledge that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen were actually family unfortunately wasn’t one of them, for the viewers at least.
But now the cat is well and truly out of the bag, and Emilia wants to remind everyone that it’s not unusual for her to accept the incest but get mad over her lineage to the throne instead.
Westeros life, everyone.
She told Entertainment Weekly: ‘The related thing, to her, is so normal. She could have easily married her brother [Viserys]. It’s not a thing.
‘It’s a thing for Jon, but let’s just forget about that!’
Viserys was a prominent feature in the show’s first season, having a bizarre hold over his sister before he made the fatal error of selling her to the Dothraki – leading her to find her feet as the queen she deserved to be.
As a result, her stubborn brother kicked off and got molten gold poured over his head – which is a pretty memorable way to go even by GOT standards.
But Viserys’s death also meant, in Daenerys’s mind, she was unchallenged in the line to the throne – until now, when that snow-loving man from the North comes and ruins her plans.
Emilia declared: ‘The main thing is we’re up for the same promotion and I’ve been working for it for my entire existence. This is my whole existence! Since birth!’
‘There’s so much she’s seen and witnessed and been through and lost and suffered and hurt to get here… and Jon doesn’t even want it!’ she added.
Well…she’s not wrong, is she?
(And to be fair, the Targaryen lineage is a little complicated at this point.)
However, if fortune and fate favours her, that might not be a worry – as the last episode’s signature song seemed to hint at her destiny on the Iron Throne.
They’ve just got to get through the War Of Winterfell first, which promises not every character will make it out alive as they are surprised by the Night King and his White Walker army.
Game Of Thrones airs Sundays on HBO and Sky Atlantic. And is available to watch on NOW TV.
