I think Rodrik dying makes the most sense. It sucks but from a story telling point of view that is the best story. Rodrik is the Robb Stark of the Forresters. Born to be lord. Just, proud and strong. Asher is an outcast, the Jon Snow of the Forresters. He comes from having nothing to receiving the burdens of leadership and and desire for revenge.

I feel Rodrik is the right choice to leave behind, it makes more sense for his story arc in my opinion. Having Ashur stay behind makes his story end way before it should.
