While millions of theories drowned out the internet building up to Game of Thrones season 8 over the past two years, there was one fan who hit the nail on the head with remarkable precision.

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 3.

The Long Hour was the episode we’ve been waiting the best part of a decade for as The Night King (played by Vladimir Furdik) and his dead army descended on Westeros to destroy Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright).

Sadly for the frontman of the White Walkers, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) flew out of nowhere, plunged a dagger into his side and seconds later The Night King and his troupe of the walking dead were dust.

Few saw it coming, even fewer could actually see what was going on because it was so dark, but among all the theorists on Reddit speculating how the HBO would kill off its most fearsome villain, gride9000 got The Night King’s demise spot on – and no one else bought it.

A year ago, in a post aptly titled ‘How The Night King Will Die’, said Redditor highlighted the significance of that dagger which has been passed around from House to House, fighter to fighter, before ending up in the hands of Arya.

A fan basically predicted this exact moment in Game of Thrones to a tee (Picture: HBO)

They wrote: ‘The term “hero prop” is used in cinema and TV to describe a prop that will be viewed in close up. I was noticing the ASASSIN’S BLADE. It has really popped back up this season. A real hero prop….but why does it deserve the screen time in a season that can only be described as quickly paced?

‘In season one Catelyn showed the blade to Master Luwin, Ser Rodrik, Robb Stark and Theon Greyjoy, who informed her that the pretty-looking dagger was made out of Valyrian steel and with a dragonbone hilt.

‘In season six we see a child of the forest stab a man with dragon glass. That man becomes The Night King. What happened to that piece of dragon glass?

‘In season seven we see the knife again….in a book in old town. This knife has history. Why is it so important compared to other Valyrian blades on the show? We see Bran give away the knife. He knows what’s going to happen. What will Arya do with it?

‘I’ll tell you, she’s going to kill the f**king Night King because that blade has some of the original dragon glass from the Children of the Forest’s Night King creation. It is the magical delete button we’ve all been looking for. That’s my theory.’

Smashed it.

But at the time other Game of Thrones fans were having none of it. Here’s just a few of the responses:

‘Where is the dragon glass on the Catspaw dagger? Valyrian steel and dragon glass are not the same. Also the piece that made the Night King most likely is still inside his chest.’

‘Valyrian steel does not have Dragon Glass in it. They are two completely separate things, Dragon Glass is obsidian, while Valyrian steel is just that, steel.’

Well, who’s laughing now?

Game of Thrones continues Sunday at 9pm on HBO in the US and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic here in the UK. Seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
