While Game of Thrones fans have an endless list of questions, which is only getting longer, one of the more pressing answers that we’re all gagging for remains: who the heck is Azor Ahai – aka the Prince that was Promised?
The Westori prophecy goes that Azor Ahai was a legendary hero who wielded a burning sword called the Lightbarer, chosen to fight against the darkness which hung over the world.
However, to make such a weapon, Azor Ahai had to sacrifice his lover Nissa Nissa.
The Red Witch, Melissandre often refers to Azor Ahai as the ancient books of Asshai claim the warrior is to be reborn again after a long summer of evil.
Naturally, most fingers are pointing at Jon Snow, Game of Thrones’ leading protagonist, but would George R.R. Martin take us down such an obvious path? Unlikely.
The latest fan theory circling around Reddit reads: ‘In Book One, the first chapter (Bran), it is mentioned that Old Nan told Bran that Wilding women lay with the Others (White Walkers) in the Long Night to sire terrible half-human children.
‘Hence, it is possible for mankind and white walkers to be in a (sexual) relationship. This perhaps, somewhat, supports theories surrounding Azor Ahai and Nissa Nissa.
‘And that later, it was, in fact, Ahai who became the thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, only to see Nissa Nissa in her new form, and due to his love became the Night King, and ruled the wall with her at his side.
‘Therefore, if Jon Snow is, in fact, Azor Ahai reborn, the same could happen again but with Daenerys, in a story that sees the White Walker threat avoided (as Ahai did not kill the walkers but merely brokered peace) and him and Dany to reunite in a truly ‘bittersweet’ ending.’
While that all makes a lot of sense, other equally as enthusiastic fans think George is calling our bluff, and we have to admit that we agree.
‘What if this theory pans out, but with Jaime Lannister as Ahai and Cersei Lannister as Nissa Nissa,’ wypipobooty54 began.
‘Wow, I never thought of this, that would honestly make for a better (theoretical) ending,” gasped d0ntcarevirgin.
‘As everyone expects Jon to be the hero, this promised prince. It’s definitely something I could see George R. R. Martin’s writing, and Jaime doing.’
Sadly, we’ll be none the wiser for at least another five months as HBO boss revealed the fantasy epic won’t be back until the ‘first half’ of 2019.
Game of Thrones returns to HBO and Sky Atlantic in 2019.
