Game of Thrones almost panned out very differently and, honestly, anything would have been better than the painfully dull finale we were served up last week.
One of Game of Thrones’ best-loved characters Ser Jorah (played by Iain Glen) was taken from us in the battle against The Night King (Vladimir Furdik) in one of the only truly heart-wrenching moments form season eight as Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) was left to conquer King’s Landing without her right-hand man.
But according to Dave Hill, a key player in the Game of Thrones writing team, Jorah was supposed to end up at The Wall with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) for the last ever scene.
‘For a long time, we wanted Ser Jorah to be there at The Wall in the end,’ he told Entertainment Weekly.
‘The three coming out of the tunnel would be Jon and Jorah and Tormund.’
But alas, it wasn’t to be. Jorah had to get it because otherwise killing off Daenerys would have been near impossible.
‘The amount of logic we’d have to bend to get Jorah up to The Wall and get him to leave Dany’s side right before [what happens in the finale]… there’s no way to do that blithely.
‘And Jorah should have the noble death he craves defending the woman he loves.’
The Game of Thrones finale, The Iron Throne, was crowned the worst episode ever and sparked an online petition which racked up more than 1.5 million signatures demanding the last chapter was completely rewritten.
Tywin Lannister star Charles Dance wasn’t a fan, and now bets are now being taken that HBO will seek redemption with a season nine. Would Jorah have made a difference? Now we’ll never know.
Game of Thrones seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
