Gendry Baratheon was described as ‘drunk on legitimacy’ by star Joe Dempsie, over a year after his last appearance on screens in the final season of fantasy epic Game of Thrones.

Season eight featured several stirring, infuriating and controversial moments which all added up to some of the most divisive final episodes in television history.

After being granted the title Lord of Storm’s End, Gendry baffled a number of fans when he declared his love of Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams).

Overwhelmed by emotion and the prospect of an oncoming battle, Gendry got down on one knee and proposed, though his offer was turned down.

Despite the couple’s passionate affair in later episodes of the show, Joe Demspie admitted their brief relationship was driven by circumstance and probably wouldn’t have lasted.

He recently opened up about his final moments in an interview with Digital Spy.

Dempsie confessed: “I think Gendry just lost his head a bit, didn’t he? He’s so drunk on legitimacy and popped the question!”

Thankfully, Arya’s reaction to the spur-of-the-moment proposal was suitably dismissive, and the final season of Game of Thrones didn’t feature a last minute wedding.

The star continued to think through Gendry’s last ditch attempt at happiness, and conceded emotions were running high with Westeros’ final conflict on the horizon.

He went on: “As wounded as he might have been in the aftermath, as soon as Gendry has time to sit down and think properly about it and rationalise everything, it’ll be pretty clear to him that probably the very reason he loved Arya was the exact reason she could never be with him.”

Some viewers weren’t happy when the spirited and resourceful Arya spent much of her final moments in the series in an unforeseen romantic fling.

Thankfully, when she wrapped up her tenure in the series she managed to retain her independent streak and embarked on a journey to discover what lay beyond Westeros.

Meanwhile, Gendry also survived the Long Night to fight another day, and was legitimised as a member of the House Baratheon.

Despite surviving the brutal ordeal, Gendry and Arya didn’t get the romantic closure they may have longed for.

However, if Gendry’s proposal had been successful and the series had continued for a ninth season, Dempsie still thinks the couple would have eventually separated.

He added: “I know that Gendry’s not often been the brightest or the sharpest tool in the drawer, but I think he’s smart enough to know.”
