Game of Thrones author George RR Martin sure knows how to tease his fans, saying he’s ‘dying’ to divulge further details about the spin-offs… but has to exercise caution.
In a new blog post, the man whose imagination brought the Targaryens, the Starks and the Lannisters to life on-screen in the HBO series opened up on what he’s been working on for the past year, assuring fans that he is – still – chipping away at The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
After opening up about the other written works in the world of Westeros that he has been focusing on, he then went on to address the ‘successor shows’ that will follow the finale of Thrones, the first of which will be the epic prequel House of the Dragon, starring Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke.
‘Those have taken a ton of my time and attention this year. I have seen some comments out there questioning how much I am involved in these new series. The answer is: a lot. Deeply, heavily involved in every one of the new shows,’ he said.
‘It’s my world, and while I have been working closely with some fantastic writers and showrunners, ultimately it is up to me to try to keep the canon… well, canonical… and to do all I can to help make the new shows great. (And I love these stories too).’
George expressed his excitement over the upcoming release of House of the Dragon, which he said wrapped filming in London and is now in post-production.
‘What I have seen, I have loved. I am eager to see more. I am excited about the other successor shows as well, however… I am dying to tell you all about them, but I am not supposed to, so…’ he added.
However, the writer didn’t leave fans empty handed, as he did share some new details on the spin-offs that will hopefully make it to air, although he acknowledged that some ideas will inevitably end up on the chopping block.
Revealing that Rome showrunner Bruno Heller is writing the pilot script for the series on Corlys Velaryon – who will be introduced in House of the Dragon played by Steve Toussaint – George revealed that while it was originally going to be called Nine Voyages, it has now been dubbed The Sea Snake.
Meanwhile, another spin-off called Ten Thousand Ships, centred on warrior queen Nymeria, is also in the works, with Amanda Segel helming the story as the showrunner.
‘[Amanda] has delivered a couple of drafts of that one, and we are forging ahead,’ George said.
A live-action show on his Dunk & Egg series has a working title of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, although he shared that they are also leaning towards The Hedge Knight, with the story based on the novella of the same name.
George also had news to share on the animated series in development, confirming the leaked news that one of the shows, with a working title of The Golden Empire, is going to be set in Yi Ti, a region set in the far east of the continent of Essos.
So while much of the plans concerning Game of Thrones-related properties are still shrouded in mystery, the author was generous in the news he decided to reveal.
Almost three years since the finale of the fantasy series, House of the Dragon couldn’t come soon enough.
House Of The Dragon is set to air on HBO later this year.
