George RR Martin has finally given Game Of Thrones fans some good news about Winds Of Winter – revealing he wrote a massive chunk of it last year.
Thank God 2020 was good for something.
The author has been writing the latest instalment of the Game Of Thrones series for nearly a decade, with the TV series surpassing its source material, and spin-off House Of The Dragon being announced following it.
But due to the success of the franchise, a series of other commitments, and good ol’ writer’s block, he is yet to make it to the final chapter of his sought after new book.
In a new blog update, Martin has given fans a much needed look into the progress of the book, and it looks like it’s going to not only be coming soon, but it’s going to be incredibly long.
He said: ‘I wrote hundreds and hundreds of pages of The Winds of Winter in 2020. The best year I’ve had on WOW since I began it.
‘Why? I don’t know. Maybe the isolation. Or maybe I just got on a roll. Sometimes I do get on a roll.
‘I need to keep rolling, though. I still have hundreds of more pages to write to bring the novel to a satisfactory conclusion. That’s what 2021 is for, I hope.’
‘I will make no predictions on when I will finish,’ he added. ‘Every time I do, assholes on the internet take that as a “promise,” and then wait eagerly to crucify me when I miss the deadline.
‘All I will say is that I am hopeful.’
We’re keeping hopeful then, too!
In the same post, Martin reflected on ‘a bad year’ and said that while he was happy Donald Trump had left office, the 72-year-old felt 2020 was ‘the worst year he had ever lived through’.
He is currently waiting to be vaccinated, having been put on a waiting list for the jab.
House Of The Dragon, which will star Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke and Paddy Considine, will be based on the Targaryen family from the Game Of Thrones books, and is due to start production in London next month.
