Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin has given a grim update on the next instalment from A Song of Ice and Fire.
Speaking to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the 70-year-old author admitted that A Dream of Spring is still a long, long way off and that his next title is currently undecided. Yep, it’s not looking good, folks.
‘First I have to finish Winds of Winter,’ George admitted.
He then teased which book he’ll be working on next, adding: ‘Maybe [it will be] A Dream of Spring, maybe more Dunk and Egg stories There’s a lot of stuff to write.’
George’s fans were divided by the news, with some saying he could have spent the time writing, with one scorning: ‘Stop making TV appearances and finish the winds of winter. This is like 4 pages worth of time.’
‘We’ll never get winds of winter if he continues like this….all he does is tweet, make guest appearances and write other books,’ echoed another.
However, a third said: ‘Every time I’m upset with not having Winds I just have to go and listen to George laughing like a giddy child and I forget it all. Keep writing, good sir, but most importantly keep living. You and your work are loved. Thank you for it all.’
The Wall Street Journal revealed earlier this month that George had gone into hiding to complete upcoming novel The Winds of Winter, while he previously confessed to finding the project, which he’s been attempting for years, challenging.
Speaking with The Guardian, he explained: ‘The Winds of Winter is not so much a novel as a dozen novels, each with a different protagonist, each having a different cast of supporting players and antagonists and allies and lovers around them, and all of these weaving together in an extremely complex fashion.’
It’s not all doom and gloom though as George dropped his latest book Fire & Blood just last week, and the final HBO series of Game of Thrones will be arriving in April 2019.
