After Game of Thrones fans realised that Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons aren’t actually dragons at all, it’s been revealed George RR Martin already settled the debate.
A Reddit post from user 4h0y1m4p1r4t3 has struck a chord with over 2,000 responses, after claiming that the Mother of Dragons may not be the Mother of Dragons but the Mother of Wyverns, which really isn’t as impressive.
The Redditor pointed out that a dragon boasts four legs and two wings while a wyvern has two legs and two wings, using its wings as an extra pair of legs. And Daenerys’ so-called’ ‘dragons’ actually fall into the latter category. Mind. Blown.
Some critics have turned their noses up at the debate, not because they don’t care, it just seems implausible.
Well, George himself did inadvertently address the confusion without even being aware that there was any confusion in his latest book, Fire and Blood.
Another Redditor, Cerv4ntes, has fuelled flames to the ongoing row, and written: ‘I know this has been covered but reading through fire and blood I saw some more evidence to add to the debate.
‘Martin references Valyria and talks about types of dangerous creatures such as wyverns being there. I’m pretty sure wyverns are also mentioned in one of the early books.
‘Isn’t this clear evidence dragons and wyverns are different in this world?
‘In my eyes shows such as GOT and the Hobbit are making the dragons with two let’s because they are more realistic, a big heavy dragon with four legs taking flight probably would not be believable.’
Yup, of all the absurdities in Game of Thrones a dragon with four legs over two would have been a deal-breaker.
Game of Thrones returns to HBO and Sky Atlantic in April 2019.
