George RR Martin has submitted plans to build a castle in his back garden.

The Game of Thrones author is reportedly hoping to erect a 24ft tower at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico – leaving his neighbours unimpressed.

According to MailOnline, he originally wanted to build a 27ft tower, which was more than regulations had allowed.

This was thought to have been rejected, meaning the 71-year-old changed his plans, chopping the tower down to 24ft in July – which is still over the limit.

According to the paperwork obtained by the publication, the architect states: ‘The owners have an extensive literature collection and the Water Garden Keep is a new, custom library to house this collection.

‘The owners have an interest in history, with a focus on medieval history.’

They argued that the tower was essential as it accommodates a lift – which allows the writer and his wife access to a roof deck, with impressive views.

His neighbours are allegedly unhappy with the proposals, comparing the designs to something that could be found in the Kingdom of the North.

‘We thought it was Winterfell when we first saw the plans. All it’s missing is Jon Snow and a couple of dragons,’ a local told the MailOnline.

‘George has done a lot for the arts and he’s very welcome here. But there’s a code in Santa Fe and the buildings have a right to retain a certain historic look.

‘If they allow something like this it will open up the floodgates to any rich eccentric that wants to live in a castle with a tower.’

It has been claimed that 43 neighbours signed a letter asking for the designs to be denied.

Santa Fe’s Historic Design Review Board is thought to have unanimously refused him a height exemption, stating his plans didn’t fit in with the local area.

He can submit new plans or lodge an appeal to the council within 15 days.
