Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos Seaworth) is satisfied with the ending to what has been one of the most iconic series’ of our time. During the winter TCAs, Cunningham catted with IGN about his thoughts on how the story ends. Naturally, everyone would love for Game of Thrones to go on forever, but as Cunningham remind us, all things must come to an end…before they stop being good things. “If you want to stay cool, and the show is cool, the best way to stay cool is to not overstay your welcome.”
We absolutely agree with you, Ser Davos. Far too often shows go way past the point they should and lose the appeal that attracted fans in the first place. It’s hard to imagine that Game of Thrones could ever be boring or mundane, but a few years down the line, we might feel differently. Ending on a high note is the right move.
It would be dishonorable to stay on longer than we should. There’s a portion of me that will miss it dearly, and it will probably read Liam ‘Game of Thrones’ Cunnigham on my headstone. But it was time to get out and wrap up that story… People deserve the end of that story and to not drag it out just because there’s a book to be made. I think it’s very honorable what they’re doing.
We’re not sure exactly what Cunningham is referring to when he mentions “a book to be made,” but we will shamelessly use the opportunity to encourage George R.R. Martin to get a move on The Winds of Winter, because why not?
You may be wondering why Cunningham was at the TCAs in the first place. This May, he will star alongside The Good Wife’s Juliana Margulies in a new thriller series coming out on National Geographic, The Hot Zone, around a scientist (Margulies) who tries to stop an Ebola outbreak in the late ’80s. Cunningham will play Wade Carter, a recluse with a secret past. The Hot Zone premieres May 27.
We don’t know much at all about the final season of Game of Thrones, but knowing it has Ser Davos’ seal of approval makes us super excited for what is it to come!
