Mark Gatiss appeared on Sunday Brunch alongside hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer, where he revealed his hopes for how Game Of Thrones should end.
An all-female Celebrity Big Brother would set women’s’ equality back by several decades
The actor and writer, who is currently starring in Gunpowder alongside Kit Harington – as well as working on long-awaited League of Gentlemen specials – teased some forthcoming details about season eight of Game Of Thrones, in which he plays the travelling representative of the Iron Bank of Braavos, Tycho Nestoris.
Gatiss recounted: ‘I pitched to Dan and David, the showrunners, that I should be the last person alive in the show because obviously if anyone survives it is the banks.
‘They just laughed at me.
‘I could imagine one final shot where I just walk among the bodies of absolutely everyone, turn to the camera and say “next.”‘
The Iron Bank has a fearsome reputation, and is renowned for always being repaid, even if it takes a long time and requires a coup or two. The history of the Bank also spreads back across millennia, so there is little doubt the institution will continue to live on past season eight.
However, it’s difficult to imagine Gatiss’ jest coming true, as the character is not nearly prominent enough to waste the closing shot of the entire show upon.
The Bank will have a large part to play in the fate of Westeros however, as Queen Cersei is relying on a loan from the bank, which will be used to hire a band of sell-swords and mercenaries, named The Golden Company, who will help her wrest back control of the entire continent from Daenerys Targaryen.
Details of season eight are sparse, with HBO ramping up security on the show to avoid the stream of leaks and hacks which bedeviled the season seven run.
Measures taken by crew members reportedly include a wall built around the set to stop prying eyes, although apparently the showrunners didn’t take the lesson from the season seven finale that walls aren’t always the best solution.
We can expect the Night’s King to be defeated before the season’s end – maybe even at Winterfell – but who will remain to sit on the Iron Throne? John Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, their offspring, or Cersei Lannister?
2019 has never felt further away, but one thing is for sure – whoever triumphs, Tycho Nesteris and his colleagues will always be on hand with a loan to a reputable client.
