Was that you, Melisandre? (Picture: HBO)

As season eight begins to really flex its muscles, we’re beginning to better understand with each new episode which key players in the Game of Thrones universe will have a say in the final outcome of the show.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Game Of Thrones season eight.

Fans have already been making a list of which characters have yet to make an appearance this season, with the fate of the likes of Edmure Tully, Meera Reed and the dastardly Night King yet to be addressed.

But has one major character been hiding in plain sight all this time?

GoT fans on Reddit are speculating this much about the mystical Melisandre, who was last properly seen at the tail-end of season seven predicting the deaths of both Varys and herself.

A new fan theory has now suggested that Melisandre actually appeared in last week’s episode, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: albeit in disguise as the girl with the burn scar on her right cheek in Winterfell – check it out below.

Melisande theory from gottheories

‘Her ruby’ is a reference to the ruby gemstone Melisandre regularly uses to work her magic, such as the ability to morph into other people – in this case, the determined little girl in episode two who demonstrated her fighting spirit to Ser Davos and Gilly.

Still not sure which girl we’re on about? It’s this fighter-in-the-making, right here.

Should this theory be proven correct, it’ll likely mean that Melisandre will have a big part to play in the show’s final reckoning after all – especially as she believes that she will meet her maker in Westeros.

Fans have also noted that the little girl has a distinct Greyscale mark on one side of her face – the same scar that Shireen Baratheon had, and one that clearly caught the attention of Davos.

It’s also thought that Melisandre wants to be in the Winterfell crypts in order to help combat the Night King’s evil plan, and therefore intended, in her guise as the girl in question, to be sent down there by Ser Davos for her own ‘safety’.

If this theory is proven true, it means that we’ll likely see Melisandre reuniting with Varys in the crypts – where, yikes!, they could both bite the dust.

Game Of Thrones season eight continues on Sundays on HBO and Sky Atlantic. Seasons one to seven are available on NOW TV.
