Game Of Thrones’ House Of The Dragon hasn’t even officially started filming yet but fans are seriously hyped – though no one is feeling the pressure more than the boss.

So far not much is known about what House Of The Dragon – apart from it’s a Targaryen family focused series set centuries before Game Of Thrones and it will feature Paddy Considine as King Viserys I

It’s presumed to start filming shoot at some point in early 2021, but key plot points are being held firmly under lock and key.

Now Ryan Condal, who is co-showrunner on the series alongside Miguel Sapochnik, has admitted the pair have ‘big shoes to fill’ given the weight and popularity of the fantasy franchise.

Speaking to YouTube’s Beyond The Trailer, Ryan refused to give anything new about the plot away, but promised fans that the show means everything to him to get right.

He said: ‘There’s obviously tons of stuff that I could say, I feel like all of it would get me shot or fired!

‘I will say this. I realise the shoulders that I’m standing on here in making this show. I realise the footsteps that I’m walking in – they’re very deep, they’re very intimidating, but I come to the show as, not only a huge fan of the original series, but also a fan of the books.’

‘I found these books 20 years ago, when I graduated college Lord of the Rings was coming out, I was desperate for fantasy and I remember the bookstore whatever the first time that I picked up Game of Thrones, the first book in the series, and read it, and I just I fell in deep, deep love,’ he continued.

‘It was the book that I loved the most really, since Tolkien, and I’ve had this affinity for the books really since then.’

In fact, Ryan loved the series so much, when he started working as a writer, he hustled to meet iconic author George RR Martin – and it paved the way for him to get the Targaryen prequel role.

‘I was out there and I said to my agents basically “hey can you set me up for dinner with him?”,’ he explained, joking he had ‘stalked’ the writer to near where he lived.

‘They did, and he accepted the offer and was interested in meeting me and we went out and had dinner and we kind of became friendly and we just kind of kept in touch.

‘I was just excited, just that this guy knew who I was and was interested in me and my career.

‘We stayed in touch over the years and he knew I loved his books and deeply cared about them.’

‘So, I will say I’m coming at this as a fan who deeply, deeply cares about this, and I am doing my best currently and will do my best to service the world, the material that George and [Game of Thrones’ showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] created are all coming before me,’ he concluded.

‘Miguel and I are really trying to carry on the legacy of the show.’

Game Of Thrones: House Of The Dragon is scheduled to air in 2022.
