Game of Thrones: How Power Really Works

Game of Thrones is all about power games. What many people don’t realize is that behind those power games are clashes of the way people see the world. There are clashes of frames. The people who can control these frames (like Tyrion Lannister and Tywin Lannister) tend to win over the Game of Thrones people who struggle more often (like Robb Stark).

There are tons of ways you can use this understanding of frames in your normal life. We’ll look at three in this video

Note: the spoilers go up only through season 4, so if you haven’t seen all the way to season 6, you are still good to watch

1) Breaking frames for persuasion (Tyrion vs. Shagga)
2) Frames in insults (Tyrion vs Robb Stark and Robb Stark vs. Jaime Lannister)
3) Frames to create options (Tyrion vs. Tywin and Tyrion vs. Lysa Arryn)

Let me know how you feel about these fictional breakdowns! I have never done one in the past and would love your feedback. Especially let me know if you like Game of Thrones related breakdowns, because there is a lot more I could potentially cover (like Tyrion’s charisma and persuasive abilities)

  1. It is only an advantage to know this information if not a lot of people know it. Now that everyone watches these youtube videos, everyone knows this information. Therefor its no-longer an advantage to know this. This is the problem with the internet: it removes your advantage by giving the information away to everyone.

  2. O shit! That is what I do, when I make my 4y old son brush his teeth. When we put the toothpaste on the toothbrush, he does not want to open his mouth. He starts to resist. Then I tell him that I have just spotted on the ceiling a flying bul with a skirt and a pink disney scarf around his neck. Then he laughs, opens his mouth and I can brush his teeth. Yeeee!!

  3. Umm, about that first part with the woods, he clearly and obviously sounded in a way that he wasn't inviting them as they were friends, he wasn't calm, he was worried and kind of scared, the only smart option in that case was what he did, out of fear he said it just to save his skin, indeed, but out of fear, not acting as if those guys surrounding them are his friends in a calm manner and confidence, though he tries to be confident, but he isn't much.

  4. That last point is actually very applicable to real life. Lets say a kid wants to be an artist, but the the parent only provides the option of getting a "real" college education or get kicked out of the house and make it the hard way. Someone can present their own third option and present it to the parent.

  5. Wow cool analysis. It's funny, you tend to like characters without fully realizing why, but Tyrion is awesome because of how well he just does everything. He's a leader, strategist, realist, loyal, semi-sociopathic badass.
