After a few weeks of growing rumors, HBO has finally confirmed that Game of Thrones will attend this year’s Comic-Con. It will be a last hurrah for the little-seen, hardly talked-about series, which ended in May.
Along with showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, a handful of the show’s stars will be strutting into Hall H this year, including: Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei), Iain Glen (Ser Jorah Mormont), Conleth Hill (Varys), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), and Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark). Executive producer and frequent director Miguel Sapochnik will be there as well.
As you may have gathered, plenty of key folks will apparently not be in attendance, including the erstwhile Khaleesi, Emilia Clarke and the former Jon Snow, Kit Harington. George R.R. Martin, the creator of this entire universe, will also not be in attendance. (Even though he still has books to finish writing, he might be off doing a slew of other things instead.)
The Thrones panel will take place on July 19 at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time. There will also be an autograph signing two hours prior. Hopefully someone, anyone will be able to ask the cast and creators all the nagging, post-finale questions we have, like: What was up with the pale horse? And who really left that coffee cup behind?
However, the event will also provide more than just earnest fan service. As some awards obsessives may have noticed, the Comic-Con panel will take place just a few days after Emmy nominations are announced—the perfect time to make the show front of mind for Emmy voters. Not that it needs much help in that department; with 128 nominations and 47 wins under its belt, Thrones is the most-nominated primetime drama in Emmys history, repeatedly breaking records at the awards year after year. It’s expected that the show will, again, be one of the top nominees once this year’s Emmys batch is announced, despite perceived missteps like the lackluster finale, a handful of gaffes, and several controversial character deaths.
HBO will also use that valuable Comic-Con real estate to get eyeballs on two of its other shows: Westworld, now going into its third season, and the upcoming His Dark Materials. The Westworld panel will take place on July 20; attendees include creators, executive producers, and directors Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and stars Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, Aaron Paul, Tessa Thompson, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jeffrey Wright. The His Dark Materials panel will include James McAvoy, Dafne Keen, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ruth Wilson, and executive producer Jane Tranter.
