This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8, episodes 1 – 3.

Game of Thrones fans the world over are still reeling from the intense Battle of Winterfell in episode three this week and assessing who survived what was the biggest battle sequence in history.

Fortunately, fan-favourite Grey Worm survived, despite viewers seeing him show fear for the first time when up against the seemingly unstoppable Army of the Dead.

The Unsullied leader is played by Bristol man Jacob Anderson and is one of the only people of colour – along with Nathalie Emmanuelle as Missandei – in the main cast line up, something which was touched on at the beginning of season eight when they arrived at Winterfell.

But now Anderson has revealed that a previous version of the scene, where the pair discuss their future, was axed from season six.

‘I’m probably saying something I shouldn’t, but a version of that scene has been scripted in previous seasons, and we even shot one, but it didn’t make it to air,’ the 28-year-old said in an interview with the New York Times.

‘But that scene of them discussing their place, and what they want, I was really glad that it made it into the show. It’s an important element.’

The touching scene in question features Grey Worm and Missandei planning where they want to go after the battle is behind them.

Missandei wants to go back to Naath, where she’s from and Grey Worm promises to take her there and protect her.

Anderson explained that the season six scene that ended up being cut from the show came from an argument his character had with Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) about slavery.

‘It was part of his perspective on slavery, completely based on something he didn’t understand, and they were having a little tussle about the bargain he made with the slave masters to reinstate slavery for seven years.

‘And Grey Worm was fed up, and rightly so. Who is this guy who is willing to reinstate slavery?’ he said.

He added that he felt some viewers ‘don’t see the point of Missandei and Grey Worm’ because the relationship isn’t about the endgame.

‘It’s been about a greater purpose, and loyalty. Two people coming out of really extreme trauma and building lives for themselves and following someone they believe has their best interests at heart.’

Anderson added: ‘I’m really proud that those characters represent something that’s not represented elsewhere on the show.’

Game of Thrones season 8, episode 4 will air next Sunday and Monday on HBO, Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
