Game of Thrones viewers were utterly ecstatic when Jaime Lannister (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) finally got together with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie).
After seasons of build up, the unlikely duo finally slept together but then Jaime ran off to King’s Landing to be with his sister, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).
Fans of the show have since become adamant that Jaime would have been better off with Brienne – but unfortunately viewers will never know if this is the case.
Dedicated viewers aren’t the only people wishing to see the couple stay together for good, as revealed by Jaime star Nikolaj this weekend at San Diego Comic Con.
As reported by Digital Spy, the Game of Thrones superstar told the audience why he believed a romance between Jaime and Brienne would always end in heartache.
He announced: “It would have been Brienne and Jaime forever!”
But when asked if he was being serious about the couple, he clarified that it probably would not have worked out as nicely as everyone suspected.
He said: “I think he’s got a lot of baggage. And I think she would probably find out after a few weeks, and go: ‘No, I’m going to have to move on to someone else! Tormund!”
It would have been some sort of sweet justice to see Jaime to heel-turn back to Brienne, only to be pied and left in the dust as she turned to Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju).
Nikolaj went on to discuss how he felt about Jaime’s ending as a whole to the audience, explaining: “I thought it was perfect for that character.

“Ending in the arms of Cersei. It made sense, to me.”
The cherry on the cake that was Jaime’s ending, however, came in the form of Brienne finishing his story in the White Book.
Nikolaj continued: “For me, the scene with Gwendoline Christie as Brienne when she fills in the blanks in the book, was really beautiful.
“I think that showed her understanding of Jaime and her love of Jaime. I thought that was just a beautiful scene.”
Meanwhile Varys star Conleth Hill also spoke about the final season at San Diego Comic Con – and confirmed his character was indeed trying to poison Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in the final few episodes.
Speaking to the enormous audience at the panel, he revealed: “Yeah… The coin, when a Targaryen is born, is going to be one side or the other.
“And [Dany’s] has come down a bit cray cray towards the end. I think Varys knew long ago he was going to die, and what the sorcerer might’ve said to him, might’ve been what [Dany] says when he’s burnt to death.”
Conleth added that Varys “knew he had to try” and kill her – for the good of Westeros.
He also added it felt to Varys to try and assassinate Daenerys because Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) didn’t believe she was evil.
Varys wanted to stop the Mother of Dragons before she could murder thousands but it wasn’t until after the siege of King’s Landing Tyrion and Jon realised the Spider’s fears were correct.
