The Mad Queen twist – explained (Picture: HBO)

A deleted scene from Game of Thrones season 8 reveals that Jon Snow had more insight into Daenerys Targaryen’s shocking Mad Queen twist than previously thought.

The final season of HBO’s high-fantasy epic was its most divisive, and the moment where the Mother of Dragons (Emilia Clarke) did a last-minute heel-turn into villainy, basically committing genocide when she destroyed Kings Landing with her dragon, Drogon.

It was one of the most controversial aspects of the final run of episodes, but a previously unseen scene shows that Daenerys’ lover (and nephew) Jon Snow (Kit Harington) had his suspicions of Daenerys’ true intentions.

In a deleted scene from the fifth episode of the eighth season, Snow can be seen talking to Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) about the plan to attack Kings Landing, with Tyrion begging that the city, ruled by his sister Cersei, be spared.

‘If you hear the bells ring, they’ve surrendered – call off your men,’ Tyrion says.

‘I don’t think she’s letting anyone surrender today,’ reveals a pensive Jon.

The shock confession certainly proves to viewers that the Mad Queen twist certainly didn’t come to a surprise to Jon, who would later, of course, go on to kill his Queen after she committed genocide.

Since the episode aired, fans of the show have questioned her sudden fall from grace. Now, speaking on the DVD release of the finale, the team behind the show have defended the move – including Emilia Clarke and showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff.

Explaining why, writer Weiss said: ‘Dany has been above it all, literally, throughout this entire battle. She’s fought the whole thing from the air.

‘When she’s in the plaza, all she’s seeing is her own armies triumphant in the city she came to conquer for all the best reasons.’

The show was recently rewarded with three Screen Actors Guild nominations, this came after the show was sensationally snubbed at the Golden Globes.

The high-fantasy epic only walked away with one Globes nomination for Kit Harington’s performance as Jon Snow as he branded himself ‘the lone wolf’ of the programme.

The Globes snub also sadly means that the show will now never win the coveted Best TV Drama gong.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available to stream via NOW TV.
