The secret of Jon Snow’s heritage has been staring us in the face all along – according to one pretty solid theory online.
Everyone knows by now that the bastard son of Ned Stark is in actual fact a Targaryen, with his mother Lyanna Stark dying as she gave birth to Rhaegar Targaryen’s child.
(Unfortunately, he still doesn’t know, and has now had sex with his aunt, Daenerys, which will make an awkward conversation when that comes out.)
It was a long run fan theory before it was eventually revealed (R+L = J forever), but according to one eagle-eyed fan, the truth has been with us since the start.
All you had to do was look at Jon’s direwolf, Ghost.
Danciro20 on Reddit posed this reveal, which quite frankly, blew our minds when we read it, and quite frankly we can’t believe we didn’t see it sooner.
He wrote: ‘Jon’s pet direwolf (sigil of House Stark) Ghost has WHITE fur and RED eyes. And the Targaryens have WHITE hair and their sigil a RED three-headed dragon.
‘AND JON SNOW (AKA AEGON TARGARYEN) IS BOTH STARK AND TARGARYEN. Coincidence? Probably. But if not then bravo George RR Martin.’
Now, we don’t know about you, but at this point we have complete faith that GRRM has left no stone unturned in his quest to finish of the epic fantasy series, and so this surely, isn’t an accident.
Fans of the book/TV show combo should also know to look for signs everywhere, so we’re going to go with that this was 100% on purpose – in which case we could’ve drawn our own conclusion a lot faster.
Don’t we feel stupid.
Game of Thrones returns to HBO and Sky Atlantic next year.
