Better luck never? “Game of Thrones” has never won the Best Drama Series Golden Globe and Julia Louis-Dreyfus has never won the Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress Globe for “Veep.” And according to our readers, they never will. In fact, they should consider it a win if they’re nominated for their final seasons.
About 45 percent of our readers checked the “they’ll be lucky to be nominated” option for “Thrones” and Louis-Dreyfus. Harsh, but also kind of realistic. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has never been die-hard fans of “Thrones” or Louis-Dreyfus’ “Veep” turn, unlike the Emmys, and has snubbed both before. “Thrones” only has one win under its belt, for Peter Dinklage for the first season, but it failed to make the series cut for its second and third seasons.
And while Louis-Dreyfus went 6/7 at the Emmys for “Veep,” she wasn’t even nominated for its sixth season at the Globes (don’t worry, she does have a Globe for “Seinfeld”). The Globe is the only major award she has yet to win for “Veep,” which has only been up for Best Comedy/Musical Series twice.

But if one were to win, 35 percent would bet on “Thrones.” Yes, the Globes have played catch-up before — “Breaking Bad” and Bryan Cranston didn’t win until its final season and “The Americans” nabbed the series prize earlier this year on its first and last nomination in the category on its last go-around. The difference is, though, both of those final seasons were critically acclaimed and beloved by fans, which you can’t exactly say about “Thrones.” The HFPA might feel less pressure to give the fantasy drama the top prize.
Just 12 percent think Louis-Dreyfus will complete her awards collection for “Veep.” But just like with “Thrones,” the HFPA might not feel as inclined to finally reward JLD since she didn’t go 7 for 7 at the Emmys. And there’s the tantalizing option of awarding her Emmys conquerer and Brit Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the hottest show around, “Fleabag.”
Only 8 percent believe both “Thrones” and Louis-Dreyfus will triumph, which sounds about right. The HFPA isn’t very sentimental and let’s not forget how much it loves new shows.
In our odds, “Thrones” is expected to get a nomination, in fourth place behind “The Crown,” “Succession” and “The Morning Show,” and ahead of “Killing Eve.” Louis-Dreyfus, however, is also expected to make the actress cut, sitting in fifth place behind Waller-Bridge, Kirsten Dunst (“On Becoming a God in Central Florida”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and Natasha Lyonne (“Russian Doll”).
